Innovative Use of Disaster Recovery Tools Accelerates Migration to New Data Center

December 11, 2014 - A State of California Bureau moving to a new location and building a new data infrastructure at the same time was faced with a near-crisis time frame for their final cutover. A powerful VMware virtual infrastructure combined with Zerto Disaster Recovery tools and a knowledgeable IT team provided an effective and efficient implementation in record time.

This California Bureau is headquartered in Sacramento with offices in Oakland, Fresno, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Their data center supports 400 users at all locations, including telecommuters. They also provide services for another agency with 20 users.

The new and upgraded data center provided greater efficiency and accuracy for end users after a smooth migration with no interruption to business.

Original proposals were requested based on a three-to-six-month time frame with “time of the essence”. Due to the short time frame for the required implementation, Enterprise Networking Solutions (ENS-Inc) was the only company willing to take on the project.

Due to complications involved with the move, the implementation window continued to shrink. Compliance issues arose, Fire Marshall clearance was delayed, and multiple shipments from multiple vendors needed to be orchestrated.

“Timelines kept shifting with increasing amounts of last minute information,” stated the Bureau’s IT Support Supervisor. “Four months became two months. Once all clearances were in place, we were left with only one week to implement the network infrastructure and get switches in place, a few days to get the VMware onto the Dell R720s and the EMC SAN in place. And finally, only a 2-day window to have the servers and infrastructure in place and in use. Our cutover time was from 6 PM on a Friday till the following Monday at 6 AM.”

The migration started at 6 PM Friday and was completed by 10 PM the same day. On Saturday the teams were able to verify connectivity and check for errors. End users were moved in and using the equipment on Monday morning!

“Using the tools recommended by the group from ENS-Inc, it went exceptionally well,” said the Supervisor. “We’ve seen the benefits of how easily Zerto can move data from one location to another. We plan to use Zerto for our Disaster Recovery. We’ve bought more licenses. We know it works.”

The new and upgraded data center now provides greater efficiency and accuracy for end users after a smooth migration with no interruption to business.
